Samuel Merritt College Opens Fully-Integrated Simulation Center

Samuel Merritt College (SMC) in Oakland, California has established itself as a new leader in patient simulation with the recent opening of its Health Sciences Simulation Center (HSSC). In response to a growing national movement toward improving patient safety, SMC has built a state-of-the-art facility and created a fully-integrated program that provides a useful model for the future of simulation in medical education.

HSSC director Celeste Villanueva, MS, CRNA, shared her perspective on the value of simulation at Samuel Merritt College. “With patient safety at the core of what drives the use of human patient simulation, the graduates of our health sciences undergraduate and graduate programs are prepared to apply lessons learned from the College's state-of-the-art Health Sciences Simulation Center into their clinical practice. We believe that this preparation positions SMC graduates to make a significant impact on the experience of patient care. Simulation enables our faculty to create a powerful educational environment where student achievement is transformed in a framework of integrated and reflective learning."

Inspired by the power of simulation to cultivate both technical medical skills and competencies necessary for effective human interaction such as teamwork, communication and decision-making, SMC designed their program to get the most educational value from the technology. By making use of an integrated audio-video system and performance assessment software, crucial post-encounter debriefing gives students the opportunity to see themselves in action and get immediate feedback on their performance. Web-based video access and videoconferencing technology allows both student and faculty evaluations to take place anytime, anywhere.

The new center features two simulation suites equipped with 2 adult and 2 baby high-fidelity simulators capable of depicting realistic patient issues. Each suite has its own action room, control room, and conference/debriefing room.

Well-known as California's largest producer of nursing graduates, Samuel Merritt plans to make the HSSC available to all departments, including nursing, physician assistant, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and podiatric medicine. Read the full story.

WORKING FOR YOU
EMS ON THE JOB

EMS Gets Its Own SIM Lab

By integrating simulators into their solutions for clinical skills and simulation lab training assessment environments, medical educators are raising the bar on their commitment to sharpen students' skills and prevent patient errors. As your partner in medical education, EMS is committed to helping you lead the way toward creating better healthcare providers. To that end, we’re building our own simulation center on site at EMS headquarters.

This is both exciting and important, because it presents new opportunities for us to serve you better.

Research and Development
As simulation programs multiply nationwide, the need for innovation from EMS is greater than ever. An in-house simulation center enhances our ability to conduct ongoing research and development, so that new applications and improvements can be discovered and delivered to you more quickly.

Training and Support
Another important need in this growing field is support. With an actual simulator at our fingertips, integrated into our Digital AV and Total SIMperformance evaluation software, we can recreate issues and pinpoint solutions faster and more accurately. The EMS SIM Lab offers our prospective clients a place to try out our integrated system and our existing clients an option for training and orientation to new features and benefits prior to upgrading.

Smart Simulation
As a medical or nursing educator, or administrator, you are the true innovator when it comes to simulation experiences. There is virtually no limit to the specific scenarios that you can construct for students at all levels.

Integrating your simulator with Digital AV and Total SIM™ maximizes the learning experience with audio and video capturing, bookmarking, web access, and other tools that facilitate debriefing and assessment. Automatic indexing, scheduling, and case management serve to simplify your life, freeing up time and resources to create new experiences.
