Drexel health professionals leading the field in shaping the future of care delivery
Drexel University enjoys a national reputation for using cutting edge technology in the classroom to enhance teaching and learning. One of its
latest programs is teaching assessment and communications
skills using Standardized Patients (SPs). The educational goal
of Drexel University's new state of the art Center
for Interdisciplinary Clinical Simulation & Practice
(CICSP) is to
help health professions students build knowledge and skills, and get the most from their clinical experiences.
The use of SPs is fairly common practice in medical
schools but is a relatively new teaching and testing
resource for nursing and health professions students.
So, why does Drexel have an SP Program? According
to Leland J. "Rocky" Rockstraw, PhD, RN,
Director of the CICSP, "SPs provide highly
realistic clinical experiences for the development
of interpersonal clinical skills. For example, areas
of study and testing may include skills in assessment
and interviewing, patient education, communication
and ethical dilemma, team collaboration, and psychotherapy."
Drexel uses an integrated
digital audio-visual system and performance evaluation
software in the CICSP to automate the entire SP encounter,
from scheduling and paging announcements to bookmarking
and reporting. The SP evaluates the performance of the student by
filling out an electronic checklist
that measures student
proficiency in both interviewing and physical exam
situations.
In addition, the faculty is able to view the
live or archived encounters
from either the CICSP's observation room
or their individual offices. "The ability to create bookmarks makes
it easy for faculty and students to identify skill
competencies as well as skill deficiencies that can
be addressed immediately with feedback," adds Rockstraw.
Drexel University believes
that the future
of its SP Program holds endless possibilities to improve
culturally competent care, to diminish error and adverse
event rates and to raise the bar in undergraduate
and graduate health professions education. For more information,
